Do you feel stuck in your career? Well, IMPROVE YOUR PRODUCTIVITY, LOVE YOUR JOB
Most of us, after working for several years in our fields of profession or specialisation, we end up getting frustrated and bored about what we do. All of a sudden, we feel like this is not what we want anymore.
Let me take you a long way back: What was the feeling when you joined college to study your profession? Were you not dying for it? Why do you hate it now?
Believe it or not, you are just not productive anymore!
If only we stopped wasting our time and improved our personal effectiveness, then, we will no longer enjoy our productiveness.
A productive life equals a happy life; only productive people advance faster in their career. When you are more productive; you learn more, you do more and eventually you are rewarded more.
By the way, did you know that there is a big difference between being productive and being effective? Being productive means getting all things done while being effective means doing the things you do right. Productivity is therefore all about being effective.
Effectiveness in productivity helps you to do your job well, earn money, live a meaningful life and learn skills. Otherwise, you will just run around in circles.
Going round in circles here means, you appear very busy but you achieve nothing meaningful; simply because it is very easy to do useless things (things that do not bring you close to the outcomes you desire).
In real life situation, you might work for 50 hours in a week, but if you do not experience any growth personally, emotionally and financially; then, you are not effective!
If you have to become effective in life, you have to have a productivity system that builds you on PROCRASTINATE ZERO.
It is simple to come up with a system that eliminates procrastination by: doing it today not tomorrow. Here are a few but simple things that you ought to know:-
- Know your time– If you do not know your time, it will be difficult to stop procrastination or even improve your productivity. You therefore must know where your time goes first.
Your memory is not enough for this exercise. Get an activity log sheet where you must feed what you do every 1 hour span for at least two weeks. This will be easy to trace than relying on your mind.
There is no specific method to prepare this log.
- Identify the non-productive work– Go through all the recurring activities, one by one and ask yourself what would happen if you stopped doing them.
If the answer is, “All hell breaks loose” don’t change anything.
But if the answer is, “Nothing would happen” you have hit the gold!
We all do activities that have ZERO returns. These are well known as “time-wasters”.
- Eliminate time-wasters– If you want to be a super effective person, keep your logs regularly. Could be twice in three months or semi-annually and you will continually identify new time-wasters as they arise. This is a beneficial activity as it will force you to think about your daily routine.
More often than not, we start time wasting activities and with time they become habits. If we do not become aware of these pointless behaviours, it becomes difficult to break them.
NB: Just be honest to yourself! If you tweet, Facebook and check on emails all day long, just put that in your log.
Shit happens!
We all don’t want to be unproductive people and therefore we should not become zombies of internet, movies, music etc. and obviously we should not to pick up traits of unproductive people including:- working too much, worrying too much, being too stubborn and also, always saying yes.
Working too much is a habit of an unproductive person. You are stranded? Please don’t be. If you work too much or too long hours in a day, you end up being worn out other days when your productivity is needed. Instead, come up with your activity logs have deadlines and also have time to relax.
We all know that we cannot be working 24 hours a day and call it productivity.
If you do all these, you will realise that your career becomes enjoyable and fun to engage!
