How to manage a toxic work environment
My boss is intolerant.
I have a nagging boss.
What to do when you get to a new work environment? This is the most appropriate feedback that we give to candidates.
I will give a case study of our director and the two companies she worked for and managed to cling top most positions as well as tough clients she’s had to work with.
For every company, management is different. In fact you’ll find the structure and modes of operation being very different from your previous work environment. But there is one thing that our director keeps telling candidates, “you went there alone, stop with the cleeks.”
When you get to a new organization, it is you and your boss. Being loyal is the key thing for you to maintain a great work environment. Forget about what colleagues are saying about the boss. It’s your journey. It’s your new chapter. Do the writing.
Furthermore, had the boss been what he is being labeled, then, they would have never been there. They could have already left.
When your boss was hiring, he was looking for a loyal employee. Someone whom he could entrust with his secrets and running of operations in whatever capacity.
It is therefore important to be unique and modest.
For both genders, it is therefore very easy to climb up the ladder in your walk to professionalism.
Let’s take a case study of our very own and renown Larry Madowo. Why does he keep flying?
It’s because he is good at what he does. He is loyal to the company. Forget about what other are saying, make yourself a jewel in the industry you are skilled in. Be an all-round person. Be good at what you do.
We shall soon be sharing our director’s journey in her career path during her employment.
Never outshine your master. This is a species of the 48 rules of power. Humility and playing dumb is very important. There is no boss who wants to be made uneasy by an employee.
Sometimes, play dumb. Give your boss credit even when you know very well that you were the source of an idea. Your boss will at the back of his mind know that you are good at what you do and he will consequently keep you at his underarm. Because he knows that you are an asset.
Be ready to correct him, be steady to stand up against injustice or wrong doing, but most importantly, bring out the best of you.
Can your boss and his friends talk about your integrity? Does any of his friends wish they could poach you? If the answer is positive, then you are a good fit for any type of an employer.
In your absentia, can a boss stand up for you? “I personally recall a case when my boss stood up for me when some of my colleagues said that I had ‘eaten’ money meant for their salary in my absentia. Why? Because I was loyal and trustworthy,” Said our director
As an employee, learn to give the best you can, and let growth be your second name. Make yourself a brand. When we are talking about growth, will your name appear? Will your boss let you go?
Another key aspect of growth is working as you own the company. Don’t be there for a salary. Be there to gain a skill, and to add value to a company.
With all mentioned, the most of the harshest bosses will be your best friend. In fact, most of my candidates, this case, my employees, keep asking me how I get along with ease with their so mad employers. Haha, I always give them what I have described in this article.
I clearly recall that my former boss could never make a financial decision without my input. In fact, most contracts bore my signature. He really entrusted me to his finances. And I was faithful.
Can you imagine I used to run the company single handedly? From his rent, pocket money, office operations, supervision etc. He would leave an entire office in my hands.
And ooooh, I found the company making slightly above 1.2m sales on a monthly basis and left while we were at 7m in one year. I was selfless. I spent nights in the office. Simply, because I loved my job.
This is the kind of commitment that I always ask my candidates to show. Not for my own sake but for their own good.
Can I even shock you, the other company I worked for in every meeting my ex boss talks about dedication and excellence and he talks of me. This is information that I get from ex-colleagues.
In any new orientation, my boss tells them about a girl he had hired. Her name etc etc etc. Praises. And they just can’t wait to ask their colleagues about that girl.
And he said, should that girl have difficulties in her marriage and want to be back, I will definitely hire her.
Those are the most memorable moments in my journey. Should anybody follow this, they will be in the best terms possible with their bosses.
With this mentioned, you should be very “naive” on matters sex and relationships. This will help you to avoid many traps. Never engage or even invite that moment. Be modest and smart in your dressing.
Let your boss and his friends admire you for your skills and expertise not for your body.
