“WHAT IS YOUR SALARY EXPECTATION?”
Interview question about your salary is the most controversial question. Many recruiters say that you should give a range. But I think differently when it comes to tackling the issue on salary;
You need to know who is asking this question. Is it the head-hunter, the recruiter or the hiring manager? If you precisely know who it is, then you will be at ease to approach the question skillfully yet professionally.
- If you are dealing directly with the head-hunter. Direct the question about the salary back to them by asking for their budget. And they will give you their salary range and you will tell them whether it is within your salary expectations or not.
- Human Resource Manager / Internal Recruiter- this question on salary is used to eliminate those who fall out of their budget; whether you are below their budget or much above. When you are below their range, they don’t consider it as a discount because they judge your worth basing on what you quote. It is advisable to not quote the salary but tell them that you will go for the Competitive salary in the company for the position.
If the Human Resource Manager insists for the figure; tell them that you are not sure what exactly to say, but from the research you did before the interview, you realised the salary range in the market is x-z (give a bracket)
- When dealing with recruiters feel free to ask recruiters the salary range being offered or ask for their opinion-Recruiters and hiring companies often have an idea of what their clients are offering. They are also knowledgeable of the value prevailing market. Usually, as recruiters, we want you to make the highest salary.
It is important that you do not negotiate the salary, “…I will not take less than…” rather, Let them give you their offer, then negotiate. Otherwise, it will seem to them that you are mean to them and you are there just to make money.
